We should all remember the 7^th December, 2017 as being the day of great social change in modern Australia.

Today with the overwhelming support of all sides of government, the Same-Sex Marriage Bill was passed by both levels of Parliament.  The legislation could be ratified by the Governor General within days, and we could all be eating Christmas dinner knowing that same sex couples could be legally married.

From the point of view of a family lawyer, nothing changes.  Since March, 2009 de facto couples (which include same sex couples) had all the rights under the Family Law Act 1975 as heterosexual married couples.  There has been some scare tactics about the impact on freedom of religion and the like, but for now let’s celebrate being Australian.
